The Philippines has selected Signal Rock as its contender in the foreign language section of the upcoming Academy Awards. Just in time to celebrate 100 years of Philippine Cinema.
Plot: Intoy takes care of his parents when his sister moved out to work overseas. Since he lives in a remote area in Samar, the only way he could contact his sister is by going to strange rock formations on the island.
The family drama documents how the population of Biri Island in the 1990s had to climb a high rock in order to get a mobile phone signal. The film was shot on location over a period of two weeks.
Signal Rock is a 2018 Philippine drama film produced and directed by Chito Roño, written by Rodolfo Vera and starring Christian Bables together with an ensemble cast of Daria Ramirez, Nanding Josef, Mon Confiado, Elora Españo, Keana Reeves, Arnold Cruz Reyes, Francis Magundayao, Archie Adamos, Sue Prado, Jomari Angeles, Menggie Cobarrubias, Ces M. Quesada and Kokoy De Santos.
The film was produced by CSR Productions and distributed by Regal Entertainment on August 15, 2018 which serves as the official entry to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
The Philippines has selected films for Oscars consideration since the 1950s, and has continued the process consistently in most years since the mid-1990s. To date none have been retained by the Academy (American Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences – AMPAS) for nomination.
The 91st Academy Awards will be held in February, 2019.
